Under the Township of Langley Zoning Bylaw Amendment (Small-Scale Multi-Unit Housing) Bylaw No. 6020, accessory dwelling units and coach houses are defined and regulated within residential zones

A coach house is permitted only within the second storey of a detached garage on a lot. A secondary suite must comply with the British Columbia Building Code and may not exceed 120 m2 of gross floor area.

Many residential zones now allow one small-scale multi-unit housing development per lot in place of a single family dwelling. Density thresholds, lot coverage limits, and maximum building heights vary by zone.

Lots must comply with municipal water and sanitary sewer servicing requirements where applicable. Properties within the urban containment boundary are subject to defined development standards

Accessory dwelling units and other structures must meet established setback and height requirements. Accessory buildings that are not dwelling units are generally limited to 3.75 metres in height. Principal dwelling units are generally limited to 9 metres.
